MATERIUM – Extrusion System

Learnings of The Protoypes

Materium is now in production unit.
But most of the 3 years with the beta testers were done with beta units.
This what Beta-V5 looks like and its anatomy:
Whats different?
The two most significant learnings from the V5 was how it always prints helical bands during cylindrical vases.
This is caused by an oscillating melt volume after the screw, a wobbling barrel in 3 axis, and a worn gearbox axially.

i re-measured everything. So i probe the nozzle in three axes, during extrusion. One case is 240c and the other 220c but they give more or less the same measurements :

X and Y deflection (wobble) : +- 0.15mm Z deflection (bobbing up and down) : +- 0.3mm

Thats huge. Combine all three and is enough to produce the helical bands.

But i remember that flexible coupling exaggerates bands. So i think, more so than the barrel deforming, the melt volume oscillation is the most significant artifact. If we count out the lopsided or non-centered nature of the screw and the melt ribbon it produces, to manufacture helical defects that big (with the flexible coupling) can only come from Z axis oscillation of the melt volume (extruder nozzle pointing downward)

Materium was constructed as a unit, then we figure out a way to mount it. This is backwards because we need to be able to mount it first, then construct it.
