MATERIUM – Extrusion System

Assembly & Installation

Limits of Materium Pellet Extrusion

For these setups :
– TMC2209 driver
– 1000-3000 accel
– PLA or PP (180-210c temperature range)
– 0.4mm nozzle

The fastest Materium can extrude is 10mm/s (extrusion speed) and around 40mm/s printing speed.

More can be achieved by :
– TMC5160 / DM542 driver
– AWD motion, or more driver power for the kinematics
– Bigger nozzle (0.6 and 0.8 and so on, maximum is 1.5mm)

In theory, what we need to do to print faster is :
– make machine more capable of swinging the 1.5kg extruder around
– make machine more capable of driving the extruder motor faster with more torque (stepper driver)
– make it easier for the extruder to push plastic by decreasing the resistance (largening nozzle size)
– use easier to extrude plastics. Not correlated to how hot, but how low the viscosity is when melted. PET for example extrudes at 270C but is very low viscosity once it melts. While ABS can extrude at 220c, it is still a thick melt hence harder to extrude fast.
– Use higher temperature to reduce viscosity (make easier to extrude)
